GRN® 45x52x4 NBR TC Double Lip Radial Shaft Oil Seal

GRN® 45x52x4 NBR TC is a double-lip radial shaft seal designed for a nominal 45 mm shaft diameter, 52 mm housing bore and 4 mm installation width. The TC profile uses a spring-loaded primary sealing lip for retaining lubricant and an additional dust lip on the air side to help protect the main sealing area against external contamination.

The seal is manufactured from NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber), a standard elastomer widely used for radial shaft seals operating with many mineral oils and greases.

GRN® sealing products have been available on the market since 2007.

45x52x4 mm – Seal Dimensions

The dimensional designation 45x52x4 mm identifies three essential installation dimensions:

Parameter Value
Shaft diameter d 45 mm
Housing bore / outside diameter D 52 mm
Seal width B 4 mm
Material NBR
Profile TC
Design Double lip

The relatively small difference between the 45 mm shaft diameter and 52 mm outside diameter means that the seal has a compact radial cross-section. The complete 45x52x4 mm dimension should therefore be checked before installation.

TC Double Lip Design

The TC profile is a common double-lip radial shaft seal configuration.

It incorporates two functional lips:

Primary sealing lip – contacts the rotating shaft and performs the main sealing function. A garter spring maintains radial contact between the sealing edge and shaft surface.

Auxiliary dust lip – positioned toward the external side of the seal and helps reduce the ingress of dust and other external contaminants toward the primary sealing lip.

The additional lip is particularly relevant when the sealing point is exposed to contamination from the surrounding environment.

NBR – Nitrile Butadiene Rubber

The sealing element is manufactured from NBR, also known as Nitrile Butadiene Rubber or nitrile rubber.

NBR is widely used for oil seals because of its useful resistance to many mineral oils, lubricating oils and greases combined with good mechanical properties for conventional sealing applications.

Compatibility must nevertheless be evaluated against the specific fluid, temperature and operating conditions of the application. A universal temperature or chemical-resistance limit should not be assigned solely from the NBR designation.

How the GRN® TC Oil Seal Works

During operation, the primary sealing edge maintains radial contact with the rotating shaft. The garter spring supports the required contact of the sealing lip as the shaft rotates.

The purpose of the seal is to separate the lubricated side of the assembly from the external environment. The additional TC dust lip provides a second barrier on the air side.

For reliable operation, the condition of the shaft sealing surface is important. Wear grooves, corrosion, scratches, incorrect installation or excessive shaft runout can adversely affect sealing performance even when the correct seal dimensions have been selected.

Selecting a Replacement for 45x52x4 TC

Do not select a replacement only because another oil seal has the same 45x52x4 mm dimensions.

For correct identification, compare:

45 mm shaft diameter + 52 mm housing bore + 4 mm width + NBR material + TC double-lip design.

A single-lip seal of the same dimensions is not constructionally identical to this TC double-lip seal. Likewise, a seal manufactured from another elastomer should not automatically be considered equivalent solely because the dimensions match.

GRN® Radial Shaft Seals Since 2007

GRN® sealing products have been present on the market since 2007. The range includes radial shaft seals and other sealing solutions intended for maintenance, repair and industrial applications.

For identification purposes, GRN® oil seals are specified using the parameters that matter when selecting a seal: nominal dimensions, elastomer material and seal profile.

For this product, the complete identification is:

GRN® + 45x52x4 mm + NBR + TC

FAQ

What size is the GRN® 45x52x4 TC oil seal?
It is designed for a nominal 45 mm shaft diameter and has a 52 mm outside diameter and 4 mm width.

What does TC mean on this oil seal?
TC identifies a double-lip radial shaft seal design with a spring-loaded primary sealing lip and an additional dust lip.

What is the GRN® 45x52x4 TC seal made from?
It is manufactured from NBR – Nitrile Butadiene Rubber.

What is the function of the second lip?
The auxiliary lip helps reduce the ingress of external contamination toward the primary sealing area.

Can a single-lip 45x52x4 seal replace this TC seal?
Not automatically. Although the dimensions may be identical, the lip construction differs. The required seal design should be verified for the application.

Is NBR suitable for oil?
NBR is commonly used with many mineral oils, lubricating oils and greases. Compatibility should still be checked for the specific medium and operating conditions.

How long has the GRN® brand been on the sealing market?
GRN® sealing products have been available on the market since 2007.
